MADWEAR

How can we get consumers to care about how their choices impact our planet? We know that personal health consciousness: eating well, exercising, and self-care has seeped into the masses. How can we apply the same sentiment people feel when they buy organic produce to buying things like the clothes they wear? I believe that we can do this by making it about the body, making it personal. Through design, I seek to shed light on the fact that there is no such thing as a healthy body without a healthy planet for it to live in.

We need clean water and air for our bodies to perform, but our clothes designed for these activities are destroying our future access to a healthy environment. Plant dyes are not being used because it is almost impossible to achieve exact colors. Plant dyes are also said to be incompatible with most textiles made for athletic wear. Madwear is a healthy line of garments that challenge the foundations of textile manufacturing in today’s world by using less toxic materials and finishes, embracing lack of uniformity in coloring, and creating less waste/pollution in production. The sight of this color palette reminds us that even the things we buy to make us feel good and healthy could be hurting future generations ability to enjoy the same activities.
